We've entered our fourth year of Lay's engineering new strains of potato chip flavor synthesis deep within their grand Frito-Lay snack bunker - and then asking the unsuspecting populace to tell them which one is actually any good.This is our fifth go-around with this type of campaign, so there's no need to beat around the bush. The new flavors are Kettle Cooked Everything Bagel with Cream Cheese, Crispy Taco and Wavy Fried Green Tomatoes.
The best of the bunch is probably the Fried Green Tomatoes.No, the real story here is that Lay's has put out 19 different potato chip flavors since the first 'Do us a Flavor' contest. That's 19 new flavors since Tom Brady's Deflategate suspension was first announced and that Malaysia Airlines flight disappeared. That's nearly 20 types of potato chips since 'Happy' by Pharrell Williams became popular and the Ice Bucket Challenge starting becoming a thing. What are we left with? This chip nails the taco vibe. The only problem is that the tacos that they emulate so well are the $0.99 ones from Taco Bell - and I mean that in the most affectionate way.More than anything, it reminds me of taco lettuce, the real light, airy lettuce in a taco that picks up the other scents and flavors in a nice crunch.The flavor from the implied taco meat doesn't come across much.
Instead, you get waves of flavor from familiar taco spices and little mellow waves of cheese mixed in.It's not the best possible flavor, but it does make for a nice, bingeable chip. This seemed like the weirdest flavor of the bunch, but easily emerges as the best.The first thing you taste when you bit down is this really zesty tomato vibe, which pops with a really sharp flavor. That aspect is then complemented by a mild accompanying heat from the spices, with little hints of paprika.It's a genius concept. It takes the little bit of kick from the spices that come with Southern fried food, the zest from the tomato flavoring and combines that with the crispiness of the chip. It's one of the few times that making a new flavor in potato chip form has actually been used as an advantage.What's more - because these are thick wavy chips - they'd also be optimal for dipping. This have a little bit of a kick, so they'd be perfect to pair with a nice onion dip or something light and creamy. In 2016, Lay's ditched the whole 'Do us a Flavor' label and went for a couple new spin-offs.Their first attempt was to pit their current flavors against some new flavors, which were slightly different twists of similar concepts.Here's how they matched up:.
Fiery Roasted Habanero vs. Flamin' Hot.
Korean Barbecue vs. Honey Barbecue. Smoked Gouda & Chive vs. Cheddar & Sour Cream. Cooked Olive Oil & Herbs vs.
Sea Salt & Cracked Pepper.None of the new flavors won. Maybe it wasn't a good idea to hold familiar, popular flavors ransom in exchange for the prospect of a new flavor. Normally, I have a pretty good gauge on which chips have the potential to be good. Sure, some of those will end up being trash, but rarely does a flavor surpass expectations.I did not have much faith in Fried Green Tomatoes. It's the ultimate snack comeback.
It is the Patriots 28-3 Super Bowl comeback of potato chips. It's the Lay's version of a Magikarp evolving into a well-seasoned, tasty snack Gyarados.It serves as a reminder to never count a snack out. Even if it sounds dumb, it could be awesome.But then again, Cookie Dough Oreos were terrible, so you never know when you're going to get burned.
